Expanding Our ECE Offerings to Serve More Young Students

Dear Englewood Schools Community,

For our youngest students, preschool – or Early Childhood Education (ECE) – is their gateway to a lifetime of learning. And as our three- and four-year-old students are learning many of the basics, they are building a critical foundation that will carry them through their school career and lead them to success throughout their childhood and beyond.

Children in ECE are not only more prepared to make the critical transition from preschool to kindergarten, but they’re more likely to be proficient readers by third grade, a key indicator of academic success. This is why Englewood Schools puts strong emphasis on our ECE programming, and why we’re adding two full-day ECE classes next school year.

School districts receive no state or federal funding to cover the costs of preschool and ECE. Englewood Schools is able to provide hundreds of our community’s youngest students with half and full day ECE thanks to grants from the Colorado Preschool Program and Head Start, among others.

The Englewood Schools ECE Program at Maddox is a model of how to best support our youngest learners. Maddox is viewed as a strong ECE model by local university teacher training courses, as well as by the Colorado Department of Education. We have been touted for the special education services we provide to ECE students, as well as our streamlined registration and on-boarding process.

Maddox’s principal, Leigh Pytlinski, says it best: “We have the most incredible staff. There is nothing our teachers won’t do for our students. They are committed to meeting each student where they are and growing them so they’re ready for kindergarten and success after ECE.”

At Maddox, our educators work with students through play and hands-on activities, building academic, social emotional, motor, and language skills. Our teachers incorporate students’ interests into their own learning, preparing them for kindergarten and giving them a strong introduction to our school system.

I welcome families with young children to visit our ECE center and to learn about the many supports and programs offered, not only for students, but for our parents as well. Maddox offers an array of parenting classes and community-building opportunities to help our families navigate parenting challenges – all the way from infants to elementary school age.
