Taking their skills to the next level, students will create broadcast journalism videos utilizing the skills of interviewing, observing, reporting, reacting, and synthesizing news videos for school dissemination through the school’s website and as a video yearbook. Students will demonstrate their ability to use computers and video production equipment as tools for broadcast journalism. This course is designed not only for the student who explores journalism, and/or the broadcast industry but also for any student who desires a basic understanding of how a free press functions as an element of our democratic society. In addition, some students will be engaged in video photojournalism, graphic design, writing, editing, video, and audio editing, lighting, and set design as necessary components to the successful production of a student-produced broadcast.

Description: Students completing this elective course will write, produce, and publish the school newspaper, the Pirateer, utilizing the skills of journalistic expression, including the skills of interviewing, observing, reporting, reacting, and synthesizing. Students will also understand and accept the legal and ethical responsibilities inherent in a free press. Students apply the concepts of layout and design in the production of the Pirateer, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to use computers as tools for publications. This course is designed not only for the student who explores journalism as a career possibility but also for any student who desires a basic understanding of how a free press functions as an element of our democratic society. In addition, some students will be engaged in photography, cartooning, graphic design, and business management as necessary components to the successful publication of a student-produced newspaper. Career planning and leadership training are also key aspects of this program.

Description: Continuing journalism students completing this elective course will write, produce, and publish the school newspaper, the Pirateer, utilizing the skills of journalistic expression, including the skills of interviewing, observing, reporting, reacting, and synthesizing. Continuing students will often assume the roles of editors, expanding their journalism and leadership skills as they produce more in-depth stories and engage in maestro design. Students will also understand and accept the legal and ethical responsibilities inherent in a free press. Continuing students will apply more advanced concepts of layout and design in the production of the Pirateer, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to use computers and the Adobe Creative Suite software as tools for publications. This course is designed not only for the student who explores journalism as a career possibility but also for any student who desires a basic understanding of how a free press functions as an element of our democratic society. In addition, some students will be engaged in photography, cartooning, graphic design, and business management as necessary components to the successful publication of a student-produced newspaper. Career planning and leadership training are also key aspects of this program.

Description: Third-year journalism students completing this elective course will write, produce, and publish the school newspaper, the Pirateer, utilizing the skills of journalistic expression, including the skills of interviewing, observing, reporting, reacting, and synthesizing. Continuing students will assume key leadership roles on the staff as section editors, with some students simultaneously filling the positions of Executive Editors (co-editors in chief and managing editors). Students will expand their roles from reporting to engaging in photo editing, graphic design, and advanced layout. Students will enhance their journalism and leadership skills as they produce in-depth stories and lead the staff in maestro design planning and execution. Students will also understand and accept the legal and ethical responsibilities inherent in a free press. Continuing students will apply more advanced concepts of layout and design in the production of the Pirateer, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to use computers and the Adobe Creative Suite software as tools for publications. Description: Level 1-Production: This course is designed to develop students’ skills in yearbook production by providing experiences in selected aspects of yearbook production. Students learn basic principles of yearbook production and develop skills that include writing copy, captions, and headlines; digital photography; desktop publishing and using appropriate technology tools for media production. The school yearbook will be completed by March. During the remainder of the school year, the students will use their yearbook production skills to create promotion and sales materials. Yearbook (Production) supports students’ development as writers, photographers, editors, independent users of technology, and as responsible contributing members of the Englewood High School community.

Description: After successful completion of one year in Yearbook (Production) students will be promoted to a higher level of responsibility in the overall look and quality of the book. These positions include “Designer” and/or “Copywriter” as outlined in the description below:
DESIGNER :
- Works alone or with a team to complete assigned spreads.
- Completes photo request forms for each assigned spread.
- Chooses/crops/labels photos for each assigned spread.
- Inputs spread into the computer.
- Checks pages for completion before submission to editors. Is responsible for making all assigned deadlines.
COPYWRITER:
- Brainstorms copy ideas and coverage concepts for each assigned spread.
- Conducts necessary interviews and research for all copy.
- Expands on their topics by adding supporting layers of coverage such as quote bars, timelines, personal profiles, etc.
- Writes copy, captions, and headlines for each assigned spread.
- Checks the spelling of every name on each completed page.
- Spell checks and proofreads all copy before submitting to the copy editor.
- Is responsible for making all assigned deadlines.
- Checks copy for correctness, accuracy, and completion before submitting it to editors.
Yearbook 3- Editor

Description: After successful completion of one year in Yearbook (Production) students may (with Teacher approval) be promoted to a higher level of responsibility in the overall look and quality of the book. They will be asked to take a lead role in guiding other students through the entire process, themes, design, and development. This is the “Editor” role as outlined below:
EDITOR: A good editor is critical to producing a good yearbook. The editor is responsible for the overall content and development of the yearbook. Though the duties are primarily supervisory, he or she can’t be above helping with the day-to-day tasks of putting the yearbook together. The editor must be able to manage and motivate the staff members, as well as take on other tasks, including:
- Works with an adviser to select the staff and helps assign roles best suited to staffers’ skills.
- Updates existing staff manual materials and helps set policies and procedures. • Coordinates summer meeting and workshop schedules and manages the staff at those functions.
- Works with the adviser to set a training schedule for all new and returning staffers.
- Issues assignments and makes sure those assignments are completed on time.
- Manages or delegates all aspects of theme/concept work, including selection, development, design, and production of cover, endsheets, title page, opening, dividers, closing, and other related details.
- Leads by example as a communicative, prompt, responsible, responsive, and effective staffer whose concern is for the staff as a whole.
- Completes the final check of all pages prior to submission and works with the adviser to ensure timely, correct submission of all deadlines to the plant.
- Assists adviser with assessments of each staffer’s participation and contribution following each deadline.
- Modifies policies and procedures as the year progresses to improve the process and the product.
LAYOUT EDITOR:
- Assists the editor in finalizing the layout portions of the yearbook style guide.
- Helps the editor complete the overall book plan.
- Trains the staff to design layouts.
- Critiques layouts, suggesting changes, and coaching designers so that their work improves as the year progresses.
- Answers all questions regarding design, so the editor can manage other aspects of production.
- Checks all pages for consistency, style, and technical errors before submission to the editor/advisor for the final check.
PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR:
- Selects and assigns photographers for each event.
- Tracks the school’s activity calendar to be sure every event is photographed.
- Notifies subjects when photos are scheduled.
- Makes sure that no photo is used more than once.
- Checks to be sure that everyone has been photographed but no one has been photographed too much.
