Last spring, Englewood Schools’ students, as well as students across the state of Colorado, took state assessments that help us measure their academic growth and achievement. All students in grades 3-8 took assessments in English language arts and mathematics as part of the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS.) Students in grade 9 took the PSAT 8/9 test, students in grade 10 took the PSAT 10 test, and students in grade 11 took the SAT.
The assessments students took in spring 2022 had expectations consistent with previous years (no testing was done in the 2020 school year and the 2021 school year had reduced testing expectations due to COVID-19). The tests provide information about what individual students know and can do in relation to the grade-level expectations. As we know, many students have not had typical learning experiences since the spring of 2020. Due to the alternating testing schedule in the 2021 school year, some content areas (English language arts or math) have not been taken by a grade level since the 2019 school year. It is important to consider this year’s circumstances and other factors when reviewing the results of the assessments. The results are posted here.
Taking this into account, Englewood Schools had a higher percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations in the following grades/subjects when compared with 2019 and 2021:
- Grade 5 English language arts
- Grade 8 Math
- PSAT 9 in both English language arts and math
- SAT 11 in both English language arts and math
Englewood Schools had a higher percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations in the following grades/subjects when compared with spring of 2019 which was the last time these assessments were taken:
- Grade 5 Math
- Grade 7 Math
- Grade 8 English language arts
We also want to highlight some of our schools for their achievements in comparison to the spring of 2021:
- Bishop had a much higher percentage of students meeting/exceeding expectations in grade 3 and grade 5 English language arts.
- Charles Hay had a higher percentage of students meeting/exceeding expectations in grade 6 math.
- Cherrelyn exceeded the state average in grade 5 math.
- Clayton had a higher percentage of students meeting/exceeding expectations and exceeded the state average in grade 5 English language arts and math.
- EMS had a higher percentage of students meeting/exceeding expectations in grade 7 and grade 8 math.
- Englewood Leadership Academy had a higher percentage of students meeting/exceeding expectations in grade 7 math and grade 8 English language arts.
We know that COVID-19 has caused many learning disruptions for students all over the country and state. We are proud of the work our students and staff members have put in during the past year. We know we have the resources and strategies in place to continue moving every students’ learning forward through our Academic Advancement Initiative.
