ECE Maddox: Where Students Blossom and Thrive

Dear Englewood Schools Community:

2019 has been an exciting year so far for the Englewood Early Childhood Education program at Maddox (ECE Maddox). At the start of the semester, students and educators moved into their new state-of-the-art building, which was custom designed to support the learning of our youngest students. With four outdoor and two indoor playgrounds, along with a design that encourages students to play and interact with their environment, the new ECE Maddox is a treasure for our community.

We believe young children learn best through play, activity and routines. We know from scientific research and studies that from birth to five years old is when the greatest brain development happens in our lives. Because preschool-aged children learn differently than older students, the environment we build for our youngest learners has impact for years to come. That's why we are so happy and proud to offer our students and families the ECE Maddox facility - a place where students love to learn. Principal Leigh Pytlinski says it best, "ECE Maddox is a place where -- through exploring, solving and creating -- preschool students blossom and thrive."

Another celebration of ECE Maddox came a couple weeks ago when Colorado Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) visited ECE Maddox. ECE Maddox hosted a press conference to celebrate 30 years of the Colorado Preschool Program and to release new data that show the tremendous benefits preschool is having on students. The data show that students who were enrolled in the Colorado Preschool Program did better than their peers throughout their K-12 education. They are less likely to struggle with reading and more likely to graduate from high school on time. That's truly something to celebrate.

Englewood Schools is able to serve 223 of our community's youngest students with half and full day ECE thanks to grants from the Colorado Preschool Program and Head Start, among others.

Last year, we expanded our program by two full day preschool classes, and we are continuing to look for ways to expand further so we can offer more families access to high quality preschool education. This is why Gov. Polis' commitment to expanding full day kindergarten and preschool seats is promising for us. It cannot be overstated how important funding from the Colorado Preschool Program (CPP) is for our families. Half of the students enrolled at ECE Maddox are funded by the CPP. Many of these families wouldn't otherwise have the means to enroll their children in ECE.

From Englewood's youngest learners and from all of us at Englewood Schools, thank you to our community for approving a bond and mill levy to build new schools and wonderful places of learning.

Kudos to ECE Maddox's Architect

Englewood Schools would like to give special kudos to RB+B Architects for the thought and intention they put into the custom design of the new ECE Maddox building. From textured wall tiles to encourage students to explore different textures and patterns; to the forest-feel of our indoor playgrounds; to the covered patios and the naturally lit spaces for children to discover, invent and move; RB+B helped to create an inspiring and magical environment to support the learning of our students. Click here to view more photos of the new ECE Maddox.

Kind Regards,

Supt. Wendy Rubin, Ed.D
