New Firewall Procedure & How to Unblock Appropriate Websites
The main purpose of the district firewall is to keep children safe and to not expose them to inappropriate material online. Thus, the Technology Department has put a new firewall procedure in place. Moving forward, all streaming media will require a teacher to authenticate into the Fortigate Firewall. This will prevent students from accessing explicit material and movies from the internet and will help to foster a more productive classroom by having students focus on class rather than a movie or music. Teachers will still be allowed access to streaming media, as videos and music are used as teaching tools.
When you come to a website that is being blocked by our filters, you can enter your Active Directory (Printing) username and password. DO NOT SHARE THIS USERNAME & PASSWORD WITH STUDENTS (doing so can cause your account to be suspended, and you will be unable to print or override until it is fixed). This will allow you to show the video or stream the music you want to share with the class. Please note: unblocking a site will unblock it for all students for up to two hours. Directions for this procedure can be found here (Mac
We will be logging the websites that get unblocked. If we see a trend of a website being used district-wide, and it is appropriate for school, we will unblock that site, and staff will not need to authenticate it anymore. One example of this is YouTube. Staff can access it without a web filter override because we have Google restrictions in place.
The web filter override is also being implemented for categories of websites that could contain inappropriate material. This new tool will provide the flexibility to override the website, while at the same time keeping them safe from inappropriate material. We trust your judgment as a teacher to know what information is best to share with students. If our logs indicate that a specific staff member is often unblocking websites deemed to be inappropriate, the privilege of using this tool could be revoked. We hope this tool will improve your ability to use the internet to its full potential with your students.
